From Guilt and Burnout to Calm and Confidence: Exploring PSYCH-K® with Gemma Honeyball

Hello, my lovely listeners 💛

This week, I’m joined by my beautiful friend Gemma Honeyball to talk about something I was, admittedly, pretty sceptical about at first: PSYCH-K®.

Gemma had spoken to me about PSYCH-K® a few times over the years, but it wasn’t until recently that I finally decided to experience a session for myself. And I walked away thinking, “That’s not gonna work.” It just felt too simple!

But then something shifted.

Within a day, I noticed a difference. Over the following days, that change became even more noticeable, until something that had previously taken up so much space in my mind simply… didn’t anymore.

That experience made me think about our Family Day Care educators and all the things we can carry around with us: guilt, people-pleasing, fear around compliance, difficulty setting boundaries, feeling like we’re not doing enough, and eventually, burnout.

So, naturally, I wanted to bring Gemma onto the podcast and explore what PSYCH-K® is, how it works, and how it may support educators who recognise some of these patterns in themselves.

What I Covered in This Episode

What PSYCH-K® Actually Is

Gemma explains PSYCH-K® as a simple set of processes designed to work with subconscious beliefs and patterns.

We talk about how we can consciously know that we want to respond differently to something, yet still find ourselves repeating the same behaviour or having the same emotional reaction.

PSYCH-K® focuses on identifying how you want things to be instead and working with the subconscious beliefs that may not currently align with that.

My Own Experience with PSYCH-K®

I share quite openly about what led me to finally have a session with Gemma and the changes I noticed afterwards.

For me, it was around anxious attachment, people-pleasing and how I was responding to connections in my personal life.

What fascinated me was that the change wasn’t something I had to force myself to do. Over the following days, I simply noticed that my responses were different. I felt more grounded, more empowered and much more comfortable recognising when something wasn’t right for me.

And that was when I started thinking, how could this translate into Family Day Care?

Guilt, Boundaries and People-Pleasing in Family Day Care

This is a BIG one.

So many educators struggle with guilt when a family asks for something they don’t really want to do.

You might want to say no…but then feel guilty.

You might know you need a boundary…but worry about upsetting the family.

So instead, you say yes. You accommodate. You people-please. And slowly, your own needs disappear from the equation.

We talk about what might be sitting underneath those reactions and how changing our relationship with guilt could completely change the way we approach boundaries within our services.

The Fear of the Department “Rocking Up”

If you’ve ever had that immediate feeling of, “Oh my goodness, what if the department turns up?”, we talk about this too.

Programming. Documentation. Compliance. Spot checks. Assessment and Rating. Feedback from your service.

Sometimes educators can carry this constant fear that they’re going to be caught doing something wrong or that what they’re doing isn’t good enough.

But imagine what it might feel like to approach those same situations feeling calm, confident and secure in what you’re doing.

Imagine not having that stress sitting in your system all the time.

And then imagine the knock-on effect that could have on how you show up with the children, your own family and the rest of your life.

When Constant Pressure Turns Into Burnout

When you constantly feel like you’re not doing enough, you’re worried about being checked up on, you’re trying to keep everybody happy and you’re carrying stress around your responsibilities, it’s exhausting.

Eventually, that can contribute to feeling overwhelmed, fatigued and burnt out.

Gemma explains that with PSYCH-K®, you don’t necessarily have to unpack absolutely everything at once.

Sometimes you simply want the thing that feels difficult right now to feel a little easier.

And you can start there.

You Don’t Have to Keep Reliving the Past

One of the things I really appreciated about my experience was that I didn’t have to sit there and trawl back through every event that might have contributed to how I was feeling.

The focus was much more on: How do I want this to be instead?

Gemma explains how PSYCH-K® can focus on where you want to go rather than requiring you to continually revisit where you’ve been.

For somebody who feels tired of talking about the same issue over and over again, that approach may be really interesting to explore.

What Actually Happens During a PSYCH-K® Session?

We also get into the practical side because, naturally, I wanted Gemma to explain what actually happens!

Gemma talks us through the process, including setting an intention for what you want to change, muscle testing, the PSYCH-K® balances and the action steps used at the end of a session.

We also talk about muscle testing and how it is used during the process to communicate with the subconscious.

If you’re sitting there thinking, “Hmm…I’m a little sceptical about this,” don’t worry. I was too!

Gemma’s advice is simply to stay curious. You don’t have to be convinced. You can explore it and decide for yourself whether it’s something that resonates with you.

5 Things to Take Away From This Episode:

1. Notice where guilt is making decisions for you.
Are you saying yes because you genuinely want to, or because saying no makes you feel guilty?

2. Pay attention to people-pleasing.
If you’re constantly putting everybody else’s needs ahead of your own, it might be worth looking at what you believe will happen if you stop.

3. Notice the fears that keep repeating.
Whether it’s programming, documentation, compliance or the department arriving unexpectedly, recurring fears may be worth exploring rather than simply accepting them as part of the job.

4. Ask yourself how you actually want to feel.
Instead of only focusing on what you don’t want, think about what you do want. Calm? Confident? Grounded? Organised? Comfortable saying no?

5. Stay curious.
You don’t have to immediately believe in something or decide it’s right for you. Sometimes you can simply explore, ask questions and see what happens.

Why This Matters

I think sometimes we become so accustomed to carrying certain things that we forget to question whether we actually need to keep carrying them.

The guilt.

The fear.

The pressure.

The need to keep everybody happy.

The feeling that somebody is going to turn up and tell us we’re doing everything wrong.

Imagine what your work might feel like without some of that weight.

Imagine how you might show up differently with the children.

Imagine how much more you might enjoy the work you already love.

That’s what I really want you to sit with after listening to this conversation.

There is also an option to book a discovery call with Gemma if you’d like to have a conversation first and explore whether PSYCH-K® might be right for you.

A Few Final Thoughts

I didn’t try PSYCH-K® the first time Gemma told me about it.

In fact, I think it took me about two years!

And even when I finally did it, I walked away questioning whether something that simple could actually make a difference.

Then I noticed the change.

So if you’re listening to this and feeling curious, but also a little sceptical, that’s okay. You don’t have to decide anything today.

Just be curious.

Because if there’s something you’ve been carrying for years, whether it’s guilt, people-pleasing, fear, stress around your work or something completely different, it’s worth considering what life might feel like if it didn’t have the same hold over you anymore.

Your Challenge This Week

Think about one thing in your Family Day Care service that creates a disproportionate amount of stress for you.

Maybe it’s saying no to a parent.

Maybe it’s charging your fees.

Maybe it’s programming.

Maybe it’s documentation.

Maybe it’s the thought of the department walking through your door.

Instead of asking yourself why you feel that way, try asking:

“How would I like to feel about this instead?”

Sit with that for a little while and see what comes up.

Let's Keep the Conversation Going

Did something in this conversation make you recognise a pattern in yourself?

Maybe you realised you’ve been people-pleasing without even noticing it. Maybe there’s a boundary you know you need to put in place. Or maybe you realised just how much mental space compliance anxiety has been taking up.

I’d love to hear what came up for you.

And if you’re curious about PSYCH-K®, head over to lifewellbalanced.au/rainbow to learn more about Gemma and the special offer connected with this episode.

Thanks for spending time with Gemma and me this week.

And just imagine for a moment what your life, and your Family Day Care, might feel like without those little monkeys hanging on your back all the time.

Big love. 💛
