Finding Your Values as an FDC Educator  (And Why It's the Antidote to Burnout)

This week’s episode was inspired by a comment from one of our beautiful educators, Jane Edwards, who asked a simple but incredibly powerful question:

"What are my values?"

After years of navigating regulations, reforms and constant change, many educators have become so focused on compliance that they've lost sight of who they are and why they started this journey in the first place.

In this episode, I'm inviting you to reconnect with your values, rediscover what lights you up, and build a family day care business that feels authentic, joyful and deeply aligned with who you are.

Why So Many Educators Feel Lost

One comment on social media sparked this entire conversation.

Jane shared that after years of adapting to changes within the sector, she no longer knew what her values were as an educator. I realised she's certainly not alone.

Many educators spend years responding to new regulations, policies and expectations without ever being asked what they truly believe about children, education or the role they want to play in children's lives.

That disconnect can slowly lead to burnout, frustration and a loss of purpose.

Compliance Tells You What to Do. Values Tell You Why.

One of the biggest messages I wanted to share is that compliance and values are not the same thing.

Regulations tell us the minimum standards we must meet.

Our values determine how we meet those standards.

When our decisions are grounded in our values instead of fear, we become more consistent, authentic and confident in the way we care for children and support families.

Your Programme Should Reflect You

Some educators love nature.

Others love cooking.

Some love gardening, sewing, music, storytelling or building community.

Those passions shouldn't be left at the door.

They're exactly what make your programme unique.

I shared stories from my own family day care about teaching children to garden, cook, sew, enjoy nature and simply slow down enough to notice the world around them.

Those experiences weren't added because they were trendy.

They came from my own values.

Children Deserve Happy Adults

One of my strongest beliefs is that children deserve adults who genuinely enjoy what they do.

If we're constantly forcing ourselves into programmes that don't align with who we are, we eventually become exhausted.

When we build our programme around what genuinely lights us up, our enthusiasm becomes contagious.

Children benefit from educators who are present, joyful and fulfilled.

Rethinking School Readiness

I also shared my personal perspective on school readiness.

For me, school readiness isn't about teaching children letters and numbers before school.

It's about helping children become confident, capable and independent.

Learning to communicate.

Managing emotions.

Packing their own belongings.

Opening lunchboxes.

Looking after themselves.

These life skills prepare children for school far more effectively than worksheets ever could.

Why Values Matter in Business Too

Running a family day care means you're not only an educator.

You're also a business owner.

That means investing in yourself, learning new skills and making decisions that strengthen your business over the long term.

Working in your business keeps the doors open.

Working on your business helps it grow.

Sometimes the greatest investment you can make isn't another resource for the children.

It's investing in yourself.

Why We're Losing Great Educators

One part of this conversation is difficult, but important.

We're losing incredible educators across early childhood education.

Often it isn't the paperwork itself that's causing people to leave.

It's because somewhere along the way they've become disconnected from their purpose.

When your work no longer reflects your values, every challenge feels heavier.

Reconnecting with what matters most is one of the best ways to rediscover the joy in what you do.

 

 

Practical Ideas You Can Use Straight Away

 • Write down your top five personal values as an educator.

• Ask yourself what you want children and families to remember about you years from now.

• Build more experiences around the things that naturally bring you joy.

• Before saying yes to a new idea or opportunity, ask whether it aligns with your values.

• Invest in your own growth as intentionally as you invest in the children in your care.

 

Why This Matters

Your values become the foundation of every decision you make.

They influence the families you attract.

They shape your learning environment.

They guide difficult conversations.

They help you navigate change without losing yourself.

Most importantly, they allow you to build a business that feels sustainable because it's built around who you truly are.

 

A Few Final Thoughts

Your values are your compass.

When they're clear, decisions become easier.

Challenges become more manageable.

Your work becomes more fulfilling.

You stop trying to be like everyone else and start becoming the educator only you can be.

That authenticity is what families remember.

It's what children remember.

And it's what keeps the joy alive in this beautiful profession.

Then ask yourself one simple question:

Does my programme reflect those values?

If not, choose one small change you can make this week that brings your work back into alignment with who you truly are.
