Thinking About Family Day Care? Everything I Wish Educators Knew Before Making the Leap
Â
Hello, my lovely listeners đź’›
If you've been thinking about joining family day care but have absolutely no idea where to begin, this episode is for you.
I've been wanting to record this episode for quite some time because I know so many incredible educators are feeling burnt out, undervalued, or simply unable to provide the kind of education they know children deserve in larger settings.
Family day care can be an incredibly rewarding career, but there's also a lot of misinformation out there. Today, I'm walking you through what family day care really looks like, what you need to know before making the leap, and the questions every educator should be asking before getting started.
Whether you're exploring your options or you're ready to make the move, I hope this episode gives you the confidence and clarity to take the next step.

What I Covered in This Episode
Family Day Care is Professional Early Childhood Education
One of the biggest myths I tackle is the idea that family day care is "just babysitting." It isn't.
Family day care is a fully regulated early childhood education service operating under the National Law, National Regulations and National Quality Framework. As educators, we deliver meaningful educational programmes in a home environment while meeting the same professional standards as long day care services.
Why I Believe Family Day Care is a Career Move — Not a Step Down
I share why moving into family day care completely changed my own career.
For me, the greatest reward was being able to build genuine relationships with a small group of children and create programmes that truly reflected their interests, strengths and individual needs.
The intimacy of family day care isn't a limitation. It's one of its greatest strengths.
Understanding the Business Side
Family day care isn't simply about working with children.
You're also running a small business.
I talk honestly about understanding tax, superannuation, insurance, budgeting, setting your fees properly and why so many educators underestimate the importance of having strong business systems from day one.
Choosing the Right Service
Not every family day care service operates the same way.
I explain why it's so important to interview services just as much as they're interviewing you.
Finding a service that shares your values, offers meaningful support and communicates well can make or break your experience as a family day care educator.
Setting Up Your Home
Turning your home into an education and care environment doesn't necessarily mean expensive renovations.
It means understanding risk, creating safe spaces, meeting compliance requirements and thinking about your environment through the eyes of a child.
Is Family Day Care Right for You?
Towards the end of the episode, I encourage you to reflect honestly on whether family day care suits your personality, your family and your long-term goals.
It isn't the right fit for everyone, but for many educators, it becomes the best career decision they've ever made.
Â
Practical Ideas You Can Use Straight Away
• Research several family day care services before deciding who to join.
• Ask detailed questions about support, mentoring, educator visits and communication.
• Start viewing yourself as both an educator and a small business owner.
• Review your home environment through a child safety and risk assessment lens.
• Be honest about the kind of support you'll need and choose a service that aligns with your values.
Â
Why This Matters
Too many incredible educators leave early childhood education because they think their only option is to stay in environments that no longer support them.
Family day care offers something different.
It provides the opportunity to build deeper relationships, create meaningful learning experiences, work more autonomously and build a sustainable business around the work you love.
But success doesn't happen by accident.
It comes from understanding both the educational and business responsibilities from the very beginning.
Â
A Few Final Thoughts
"The intimacy of family daycare is actually a feature and it's not a limitation."
I truly believe family day care gives educators the opportunity to create the kind of learning environment they've always dreamed of providing.
It isn't always easy.
But for the right educator, it can be one of the most fulfilling careers in early childhood education.
